The three tiers, honestly described
Budget: merchant own-brand and entry ranges. Perfectly serviceable ceramics, thinner glaze, basic soft-close mechanisms, cistern internals that are cheap to replace but replaced sooner. Sensible for rentals and pre-sale refreshes.
Mid-range: the sweet spot for most family homes. Denser ceramic, better glaze consistency, proper concealed fixings, soft-close as standard and spares you can still buy in a decade.
Premium: thin-rim or rimless pans, precision ceramics, designer profiles, longer warranties and, importantly, brassware and furniture designed to match across a whole range.
The jump from budget to mid-range buys durability. The jump from mid-range to premium mostly buys design and finish, which is a valid reason to spend but a different one.
Brand comparison at a glance
Typical supply-only prices for a WC pan, cistern and basin as a pair, before installation. Retail pricing moves, so treat these as bands rather than quotes.
| Tier | Examples | WC + basin supply | Typical warranty | Spares in 10 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Merchant own-brand, entry ranges | £220-£450 | 1-5 years | Often discontinued |
| Mid-range | Ideal Standard, Roca, VitrA | £450-£900 | 10-25 years | Widely available |
| Upper mid | Villeroy & Boch, Duravit entry | £900-£1,600 | 25 years | Widely available |
| Premium | Duravit, Laufen, Geberit ONE | £1,600-£3,500+ | 25 years to lifetime | Excellent |
The parts that fail first
Cistern internals. Fill valves and flush valves are the most common bathroom callout of all. Mid-range and above use serviceable Geberit or equivalent internals that you can rebuild in twenty minutes.
Soft-close hinges. Budget seats sag within a couple of years, and replacement seats often cost more than the price gap you saved at the outset.
Basin waste and trap quality. Thin chrome-on-plastic wastes pit and stain. A solid brass waste is a small upgrade with an outsized effect on how the basin looks in year five.
Concealed frames. If you want a wall-hung WC, spend the money on the frame rather than the pan. The frame is buried in the wall and is the one component you cannot easily change later.
Where we would and would not save
Save on the bath itself if it is going to be tiled in and mostly hidden. A good quality reinforced acrylic bath performs well and costs a fraction of steel or stone resin.
Do not save on the shower valve. A thermostatic valve from a known brand is the difference between a stable temperature and a scald every time the kitchen tap runs.
Do not save on the concealed cistern frame or the tanking system. Both are behind the tiles, and both are expensive to reach again.
Spend on what you touch daily. Taps, the shower handset and the WC seat get used thousands of times a year and are what makes a bathroom feel cheap or solid.
Supplying your own suite
You are welcome to supply your own sanitaryware and we will fit it. What we ask is that everything is on site and checked before the first day, because a missing waste kit stops a job dead.
Check the pan spigot type and the waste centres against your existing drainage before ordering. A back-to-wall pan with the wrong outlet is the single most common delivery problem we see.
Where you buy through us, faults are our problem to resolve. Where you supply, warranty claims sit with your retailer, which is worth factoring into the saving.
How to compare suites in a showroom
Lift the toilet seat and check how the hinges fix. Look inside the basin overflow and at the underside of the rim for an even glaze. Ask whether spare parts such as flush valves and seat fixings are sold separately and stocked in the UK.
Compare the fittings that come in the box, not only the ceramic. A cheap suite with a poor flush mechanism or thin basin waste costs more to put right later than the difference in price at the start.
Frequently asked questions
Is an expensive suite actually better?
Up to the mid-range, yes, clearly: denser ceramic, better internals and spares you can still buy. Above that you are largely paying for design, thinner profiles and finish rather than function.
Which brands do you fit most often?
Mid-range ceramics from the mainstream European manufacturers make up the bulk of our work, because they balance price, glaze quality and long-term spares availability.
Can I buy my own suite and have you fit it?
Yes. We just need everything on site and unpacked before day one, and we will flag anything at survey that will not connect to your existing drainage.
Are rimless toilets worth it?
For cleaning, genuinely yes. There is no hidden rim channel to scrub. Choose a known brand though, because rimless flush performance varies more than standard pans.
What warranty comes with the installation?
Manufacturer warranties cover the products themselves. Our workmanship is backed by our own guarantee and we are fully insured, with certificates available on request.
Is it worth buying a full suite from one brand?
It helps the whites match and keeps spare parts simple, but it is not essential. Many good bathrooms mix a toilet from one range with a basin and vanity from another.
