Wall-hung toilets and basins
Lifting the toilet and basin off the floor makes a room look larger and makes cleaning easier. Both need a frame or strengthened wall and the cistern and pipes hidden behind a false wall, so they have to be decided before first fix.
The false wall can double as a shelf or niche, which adds storage without extra furniture.
Large format tiles and fewer grout lines
Big porcelain tiles give a calm, modern finish with fewer grout lines to clean. They need a very flat wall or floor and careful setting out, so allow for preparation. Our large format tiles guide explains what is involved.
Running the same tile on the floor and up one wall, or through into a level shower area, is a simple way to make a small room feel seamless.
Walk-in showers and level floors
A frameless glass panel on a low tray, or a full wet room, suits a modern bathroom better than a framed enclosure. Linear drains let the floor fall one way and look neater than a round grate.
These choices affect the floor build-up and waste route, so they belong in the design stage rather than being added later.
Hidden storage
Clutter is what makes a modern bathroom look tired. Tiled niches in the shower, mirrored cabinets recessed into the wall and wall-hung drawers under the basin keep bottles and towels out of sight.
Niches need to be planned where there are no pipes or cables and framed before the walls are boarded. Our storage planning guide covers the common sizes.
Lighting and finishes
Layered lighting, such as a ceiling light for general use, a lit mirror at the basin and low-level light in a niche, does more for a modern bathroom than any single fitting. All of it needs wiring in place before tiling, by a qualified electrician.
Keep brassware finishes consistent across taps, shower and accessories. Matt black and brushed finishes are popular now; chrome remains the safest choice if you want the room to age well.
Turning ideas into a plan
Collect pictures, but bring room measurements too. On the free quote visit we can tell you which ideas suit the room, the floor and the existing pipes, and which would take more work than they are worth. We can design and fit without you needing a showroom visit.
Ideas that are easy to regret
Very dark grout on light tiles shows every patch of limescale. Open shelving in a shower gathers soap and splashes. Vessel basins on low worktops can splash more than expected. A freestanding bath squeezed into a small room loses the space around it that makes it look good. None of these is wrong, but each works best when the room suits it, so talk them through before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a bathroom look modern?
Clean lines, fewer visible joints, wall-hung fittings, concealed pipework and a simple colour palette. Good lighting finishes it off.
Are wall-hung toilets strong enough?
Yes, when fitted to a proper frame fixed to the floor and wall. The frame carries the weight, not the tiles.
Do dark tiles work in a small modern bathroom?
They can, especially on one wall or the floor, but they need good lighting. Lighter tiles are the safer choice if the room has little daylight.
Can I keep my existing layout and still get a modern look?
Yes. New fittings, tiles and lighting in the same positions can transform a room, and keeping pipe positions avoids extra work.
Do you design the bathroom as well as fit it?
Yes. We can plan the layout and help you choose fittings and tiles, then carry out the plumbing, tiling and installation.
