Underfloor heating in a wet room: does it work and how is it fitted?

Yes, underfloor heating works well in a wet room and is one of the most useful additions you can make, because it dries the floor quickly after each shower and keeps tiles warm underfoot. It has to be planned into the floor build-up from the start, sitting in the right layer relative to the waterproofing and following the fall to the drain, so it cannot easily be added once the room is tiled.

This guide explains where the heating goes, how it interacts with the tanking and the drain, and what to decide before the work starts. For underfloor heating in an ordinary bathroom, see our bathroom underfloor heating guide.

Why a wet room benefits more than most rooms

In a wet room the whole floor gets wet, not just a tray. Warm tiles speed up drying, which cuts down standing water, slippery patches and the damp that feeds mould in grout.

It also lets you drop a radiator, which frees wall space in rooms that are often small.

Where the heating sits in the floor

A wet room floor is built in layers: the structural floor, a board or screed shaped to fall towards the drain, the waterproofing membrane, then adhesive and tile. Electric heating mats are commonly laid in the adhesive bed or just beneath it, and the manufacturer's instructions set out exactly which layer they belong in with the tanking system being used.

Getting the order right matters, because fixings through the membrane or heating cable trapped under a drain flange can create exactly the leak a wet room is designed to avoid.

Working around the drain and the fall

Heating cable is kept clear of the drain body and its clamping ring, and follows the slope of the floor rather than being laid flat and levelled out. A linear drain at one edge makes the layout simpler than a central point drain.

The mat should not run under fixed items such as a toilet pan or vanity unit, where heat is trapped and wasted.

Electric or water-based systems

Electric mats are thin and usually the practical choice when a wet room is fitted as part of a refurbishment, because they add very little height to the floor.

Water-based systems run from the central heating and are more common in new floors or extensions, where there is depth for pipes in a screed. Either way, electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician and meet the rules for bathrooms.

What to decide before work starts

Whether you want heating at all, because the decision affects the floor build-up. Where the thermostat will go, which needs to be outside the wet zones or suitably rated. Which areas of the floor will be heated. And whether a heated towel rail will still be needed; our towel rails vs radiators guide helps with that.

Testing and handover

Heating cable is normally tested before it is covered and again once the tiles are down, so any fault is caught while it can still be fixed. The system should not be switched on at full heat until the adhesive and grout have cured, following the manufacturer's guidance. At handover you should be shown the thermostat settings and given the product details for your records.

Your questions answered

Is it safe to have electric underfloor heating in a wet room?

Yes, when a system designed for wet areas is installed to the manufacturer's instructions and connected by a qualified electrician with the right protection.

Can underfloor heating be added to an existing wet room?

Not easily. It would mean lifting the tiles and disturbing the waterproofing, so it is best decided before the floor is built.

Will underfloor heating heat the whole wet room?

It often can in a small, well-insulated room. In larger or colder rooms it may be paired with a heated towel rail.

Does underfloor heating raise the floor level?

Electric mats add very little. Water systems need more depth, which can affect door thresholds and the level-access transition.

What does underfloor heating add to a wet room price?

It depends on the floor area and system. We do not publish wet room prices at the moment; we explain the factors and give a fixed quote after a free survey.
