Grout, Adhesive and Sealant - The Cheap Materials That Decide Everything

Flexible cement-based adhesive is the baseline in bathrooms, particularly over timber substrates, backer boards and anything heated.

Coverage matters as much as product: solid bed on floors and large formats, back-buttering where the tile size demands it. Spot-bedding is the single most common cause of cracked floor tiles.

Rapid-set products are useful for keeping a project moving, but they shorten working time and are not an excuse for rushed setting out.

Cement-based grout, correctly mixed and matched to the joint width, is fine for most wall areas and is easy to repair.

Epoxy grout resists staining and chemicals far better and is excellent in showers and on floors, though it costs more in both material and labour because it is unforgiving to work with.

Colour choice is a design decision, not just practical: matching grout to tile makes surfaces read as one plane, contrasting grout emphasises the grid.

Every internal corner, every wall-to-floor junction, every tile-to-tray, tile-to-bath and tile-to-worktop joint. These are movement joints and rigid grout will crack in all of them.

Use a quality anti-mould sanitary sealant, tooled properly, and expect it to be a maintenance item that is renewed periodically rather than a permanent finish.
