Clearances that drive the plan
In front of the WC you want roughly 600mm of clear space, and around 200mm either side of the pan centre line for comfort.
A basin needs elbow room in front, which is why a shallow projection basin in a narrow room beats a deeper one squeezed in.
Door swing is the most common conflict. An inward-opening door eats a metre square of the most useful floor area; changing to an outward or sliding door frequently unlocks the whole layout.
Fittings that genuinely buy space
Wall-hung WC and basin with concealed cistern: frees visible floor, makes cleaning easier and makes the room read larger. The framing takes around 200mm of depth, so it works best on a wall you can afford to thicken.
Shortened baths (1500mm or 1600mm) and shower-baths let a family keep bathing capability without dominating the room.
Quadrant and sliding-door enclosures avoid a door swinging into circulation space.
Finishes that avoid making it feel smaller
Larger tiles with fewer grout lines, run continuously from floor up the wall, reduce visual clutter and make a small room read as one volume.
Recessed niches instead of protruding shelves keep the shower usable without narrowing it.
Lighting layered at two heights removes the shadowed corners that make small rooms feel like cupboards.
Frequently asked questions
Should I remove the bath in a small bathroom?
If it is the only bath in the house, think carefully about future buyers and young children. Where there is a bath elsewhere, a walk-in shower usually transforms a small room.
Are wall-hung fittings more expensive to install?
Slightly, because of the supporting frame and the boxing. Most people judge the space and cleaning benefit worth it.
Can you change the door to open outwards?
Usually, provided the landing or hallway allows it safely. We will check it at survey.
What tile size suits a small bathroom?
Generally larger than people expect. Fewer joints looks calmer; very small mosaics on every surface make a small room busy.
Is it worth moving the toilet in a small bathroom?
Only if it unlocks a better layout. Moving it depends on where the soil pipe can run, so it is checked at survey before the design is fixed.
